Abstract

Based on the data from Intercorp, the talk offers an analysis of 300 English binominal noun phrases (BNPs) through their Czech translation correspondences. In the English BNP (e.g. a giant of man, a hell of a problem), “the first noun [N1] denotes a property or quality that is predicated of the referent of the second noun [N2]” (Aarts 1998: 118). This paper has a twofold aim: a) to identify and describe the Czech means which perform the same functions as the English BNP, b) to further specify the functions of the construction as seen through the Czech counterparts.
